In the serene village of Adpai, nestled within Ponda, Goa, a place known for nurturing remarkable talent, the story of Sagar Mule begins. Raised in a community where art and culture have deep roots, Sagar’s journey has been one of self-discovery, creativity, and overcoming challenges. Educated at the respected Shree Saraswati High School in Queula, Sagar’s passion for art was ignited early. His academic pursuit led him to Hyderabad, where he pursued a Master’s degree at the renowned Sarojini Naidu School of Fine Art at the University of Hyderabad.

The Awakening in Hyderabad

In the heart of Hyderabad’s vibrant cultural landscape, Sagar found himself torn between the city’s dynamic, fast-paced world and the quiet, nostalgic pull of his Goan roots. The contrast between the cosmopolitan energy of Hyderabad and the tranquil essence of Goa sparked a deep longing within him. It was in this period of reflection that Sagar realized the profound impact his homeland had on his identity as an artist. It was during this time, in 2016, that he experienced a transformative shift in both his personal and artistic journey, marking the start of a new chapter.

A Tribute to Adpai and Kaavi Art

Sagar’s bond with his village, Adpai, holds a special place in his heart. It is here, in this picturesque Goan village, that he first encountered the mesmerizing “Kaavi Art” form, which would later become central to his artistic identity. Reflecting on his roots, Sagar acknowledges the invaluable role his village played in shaping his career. He credits his upbringing in Adpai for all his artistic achievements, stating, “All the recognition I enjoy today stems from my upbringing in Adpai, where I first encountered Kaavi Art. I owe everything to the support of my friends, whose encouragement guided me into the world of art.”

The Power of Education

Sagar’s educational journey further fueled his growth as an artist. He highlights the critical role that Goa College of Fine Arts played in refining his skills. “The theoretical foundation I acquired at Goa College of Fine Arts was essential in shaping my artistic understanding, helping me grasp the historical context of my art form,” he says. This period of academic study sharpened his craft, grounding his art in both tradition and innovation.

Humble Beginnings and Resilience

Sagar’s early life was not without its struggles. Born into a modest family, he learned early on the value of resilience and hard work. His parents, though lacking formal education and financial stability, provided him with an unwavering moral foundation that Sagar carries with him to this day. “Growing up in humble circumstances taught me the importance of persistence and a grounded perspective on life. We lacked material wealth, but our resilience became our greatest asset,” he reflects. For Sagar, challenges have always been growth opportunities.

Turning Trash into Treasure: The Rise of Sagar Mule

Sagar’s resourcefulness is one of his defining traits. He began creating art from discarded materials and scrap, a practice that originated out of necessity. “Our house was next to a dumping ground, and I often found myself rummaging through the debris, discovering hidden treasures in what others considered trash. Over time, I began transforming these objects into art,” he recalls. This creative practice became his lifeline, allowing him to make art from limited resources. His years at Goa College of Fine Arts were shaped by this unconventional method, which was met with acceptance and encouragement from the staff, affectionately known as “Kaka” and “Kaki.”

A Journey of Innovation and Growth

Financial constraints never deterred Sagar from pursuing his passion. While studying for his Master’s in Hyderabad, he took on part-time jobs to support his art. “Financial limitations pushed me to think outside the box. With limited funds for art supplies, I had to get creative, finding unconventional materials and canvases,” he says. In Sagar’s eyes, the constraints he faced were not hindrances but catalysts for his innovation. “Challenges are the drivers of growth. Without them, one’s potential remains dormant. It is only when you step out of your comfort zone that creativity blossoms,” he believes.

Making a Mark in a Saturated Landscape

In the competitive world of art, Sagar sought to carve a unique niche for himself. “In a saturated artistic landscape, differentiation is key,” he explains. To stand out, he began infusing his work with social commentary, using his art to provoke thought and stir emotions. For Sagar, art is not merely about creating—it’s about fostering a connection with the audience. “Art should speak to the viewer, resonate with them, and spark a conversation. Its purpose goes beyond aesthetics; it’s about making people think and feel.”

Bridging the Gap: Connecting with the Audience

A key element of Sagar’s practice is communication. He emphasizes that art should be accessible to all, which is why he chooses to communicate through simplicity. “I communicate in Konkani, my native language, to ensure that my art speaks to my community. Art should transcend linguistic barriers and reach everyone,” he says. By prioritizing clear communication, Sagar aims to create a bridge between his art and its audience, ensuring his work is not only appreciated but understood.

A Milestone Moment: Modi’s “Man Ki Baat”

Sagar’s journey took a significant turn in 2023 when he was featured on Prime Minister Modi’s “Man Ki Baat” program. The unexpected opportunity was a defining moment in his career. “Receiving a call from Pune to be interviewed about my Kaavi Art was a surreal experience,” he recalls. This moment of recognition paved the way for even greater achievements. In April 2023, Sagar had the honor of representing Goa at the Man Ki Baat Conclave, a prestigious event that saw him present his art to dignitaries like Amit Shah and Anurag Thakur. “Being the sole representative from Goa was an incredible privilege,” he reflects.

Recognition and Achievements

Sagar’s accomplishments have continued to accumulate, with his work being featured in renowned platforms like “Amar Chitra Katha.” “Being the first Goan artist to be featured in Amar Chitra Katha is a significant milestone for me,” he says proudly. These recognitions serve as validation of his dedication and passion, driving him to continue sharing his unique vision with the world.

A Deep Connection with the Earth: Sagar’s Artistic Ethos

At the core of Sagar’s art is a deep-rooted connection to the soil, or “Maati.” For him, the earth has been a source of inspiration and a constant provider. “The earth has given me so much, and I feel a deep responsibility to give back,” he expresses. His commitment to preserving the environment is a significant aspect of his work. Drawing inspiration from Goa’s liberation from Portuguese rule, Sagar envisions a similar emancipation from the grip of plastics. “My journey began with cleaning plastic litter from the streets of Goa, and it continues with the mission to raise awareness about environmental responsibility,” he explains.

Preserving Kaavi Art and Cultural Heritage

Sagar is equally dedicated to preserving and promoting the Kaavi Art form, a unique Goan tradition. He travels to various villages, teaching and inspiring others to appreciate this indigenous art form. “It’s crucial that we recognize the importance of our local art amidst the influx of Western influences. Kaavi Art is a part of our cultural heritage, and it must be preserved,” he asserts.

Gratitude and Reflection

Sagar’s gratitude towards his family, friends, and community is evident. “I owe everything to my family—my father, mother, wife Jyoti, and son Daksh—for their unwavering support. I also owe a debt of gratitude to my sister and the village community, whose belief in me has been my driving force,” he says. These individuals, along with countless others, have played a vital role in his journey.

Shaping Destiny: Sagar’s Philosophy

For Sagar, destiny is not a preordained path but a tapestry that one weaves through effort, determination, and resilience. “We hold the power to shape our own fate. But as we chase our dreams, we must stay grounded in our roots, for each of us contributes to the larger tapestry of life,” he concludes. With a profound connection to the soil and a passion for art, Sagar Mule’s journey is one of perseverance, creativity, and a deep commitment to preserving his cultural heritage.
