In one of the shocking incidents, a well-known celebrity Chef Floyd Cardoz died of Coronavirus on 25th March 2020 in New Jersey. He was the co-owner of the ‘Bombay Canteen’ and a famous Goan Restaurant ‘O Pedro’ in Mumbai. He was 59, when he breathed his last. He studied biochemistry before he switched to culinary arts, attending culinary schools in India and Switzerland before moving to New York City.
According to the reports, he was in Mumbai until 8th March and then he left for New Jersey where he was living but on the 18th he got himself admitted into the hospital in New Jersey when he felt feverish.
According to the reports, Chef Floyd Cardoz, who tested positive for Covid-19, died of the infection in a hospital in New Jersey on Wednesday, his family confirmed. He was the co-owner of two popular restaurants in Mumbai – Bombay Canteen and O Pedro. He had recently launched his third venture, the Bombay Sweet Shop.
“As a precautionary measure we have informed the Health Department in Mumbai about the same,” it said. “We are also reaching out personally to people who have interacted with him during his visit to India, so they can take necessary medical advice should they indicate any symptoms [fever, cough, shortness of breath] and or [put themselves in] self-quarantine,” reported the Mid Day.
According to the statement issued by Hunger Inc where Chef Floyd was a co-founder confirmed the demise of Floyd Cardoz. “It is with deep sorrow that we inform you of the passing away of Chef Floyd Cardoz (59 years), Co-Founder, Hunger Inc. Hospitality, on March 25, 2020, in New Jersey, USA,” it said. “He is survived by his mother Beryl, wife Barkha and sons Justin and Peter.
In their statement, they further stated that. “Floyd Cardoz (59 years), and tested positive for COVID-19 on March 18, 2020. As a precautionary measure we have informed the Health Department in Mumbai about the same. We are also reaching out personally to people who have interacted with him during his visit to India, so they can take necessary medical advice should they indicate any symptoms (fever, cough, shortness of breath) and/ or self-quarantine. Floyd Cardoz flew back to New Jersey from Mumbai via Frankfurt on March 8, 2020.”
Chef Caroz was running a famous restraint Tabla in New York City, stated the Mid-Day report. According to them, Cardoz, who attended culinary school in Mumbai and later at Les Roches in Switzerland, made headlines in New York City in the late 1990s with the opening of Tabla, the fine-fine Indian restaurant, and later El Verano Taqueria and North End Grill.
In 2014, he opened White Street. His first big imprint in the city came in 2015 when he opened The Bombay Canteen in Lower Parel. In 2016, Cardoz created a flutter in NYC with Paowalla, which he shut down in 2018 to reopen as the Bombay Bread Bar.
The chef returned to India to open the Goan fine-dine O Pedro in BKC to redefine the state’s cuisine, and most recently with The Bombay Sweet Shop, that reimagines Indian mithai with influences from across the country.
Well known Bollywood celebrities such as Rishi Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, Athiya Shetty, and others expressed shock and mourned his death saying ‘Will cherish meal you made for us’
Rishi Kapoor shared his condolences on Twitter. “RIP. Floyd Cardoz. I will cherish the meal you made for us at your restaurant “Paowala” on Spring Street. NY. And several times at the “Bombay Canteen” (Phoenix Mills) and “O’Pedro”(BKC) all in Mumbai,” he wrote. Sonam Kapoor wrote, “RIP chef.”

Cardoz, who collaborated with restaurateur Danny Meyer, won recognition in New York as the executive chef and later co-owner of the restaurant, Tabla, which received rave reviews from several publications. According to Harper Collins, which published “One Spice, Two Spice,” Cardoz was born in then Bombay and raised in there and in Goa.
