When envisioning the legal profession, one might picture fierce courtroom battles. However, for Komal Mathur, a promising law student from V.M. Salgaocar College of Law in Miramar, the conventional methods of dispute resolution were not sufficient. She has embarked on a transformative journey in Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), specializing in mediation.
Hailing from Thane, Maharashtra, Komal relocated to Goa at the age of 11. After completing her education at Navy Children’s School in Vasco, she set her sights on a legal career, determined to forge her own path in a field traditionally dominated by her family’s maritime background.
Komal’s fascination with ADR ignited when she joined her college’s ADR Society. Here, she uncovered the art of mediation—a process that facilitates conflict resolution outside the courtroom’s constraints. This revelation proved to be a pivotal moment for her, as she found mediation to be more effective, efficient, and harmonious compared to conventional litigation.
Despite her aspirations, Komal faced challenges, particularly as a student from a tier two law school. Undeterred, she committed herself to excel beyond expectations, setting an ambitious target to secure five trophies in five years. Remarkably, she exceeded this goal, clinching ten trophies in various competitions, including the prestigious INADR Poland tournament in September 2022, where her team stood out as the sole Asian representative. Her exceptional performance earned her the award for ‘Best Opening Statement’ and recognition as one of the top negotiating pairs.
Komal’s accomplishments highlight her relentless dedication and hard work. In addition to her accolades, she has co-authored a book and penned a blog on Transformative Mediation, further showcasing her commitment to the field.
Yet, Komal is acutely aware of the skepticism surrounding ADR within the legal community. To combat this, she encourages aspiring law students to seize every opportunity for growth through competitions, internships, and conferences.
Looking ahead, Komal envisions a bright future in ADR, aiming to play a pivotal role in fostering amicable dispute resolutions. With her unwavering passion for mediation and dedication to the legal profession, there is little doubt that Komal Mathur will continue to leave her mark on the evolving landscape of Indian law. Her journey is not just a personal triumph; it’s a beacon for future legal professionals seeking alternative paths in dispute resolution.
