Carnival is just around the corner and the preparations for the same have already begun. The city roads are getting the facelift and decorations have being done. The Goa Tourism is the main sponsor for the Carnival festival which dwells across the state for four days and the committee constituted by the Tourism Department has selected the King Momo for the Goa Carnival 2017, please take a look at the King Momo.
Based on the information provide by the sources in the Tourism Department, renowned Goan musician, and entertainment King, Roque Tome Fernandes has been selected as King Momo for Goa Carnaval 2017. A committee constituted by Goa Tourism today selected Roque Fernandes who was one among the four applicants aspiring to lead Goa Carnaval between February 25-28, 2017.
According to the reports, The King Momo, Roque Fernandes, aged 65 and resident of Panaji, is a retired government employee. He is a well-known musician and popular figure in the Goan entertainment industry. Fernandes has played key roles in Mando festivals and many top Goan cultural events. He is also a popular figure at the Mormugao Port Trust (MPT), dressed as King Momo welcoming foreign tourists on cruise liners arriving at the Port.
The sources said that Mr. Fernandes is representing the King Momo for the fifth time as and his selection came after a stiff competition from three other contestants. Thrilled to be King Momo once again, Fernandes said, “ I love Goa, I love to be King Momo and I am all set to enthrall Goa and all visitors to the State for the four-days Carnaval celebrations.”
According to the traditions set by the Portuguese in Goa, King Momo reigns the state of Goa for four days by announcing the beginning of Carnival on the first day in the capital city of Goa and after that Goa dives into the fun frolic for the four days. King Momo’s entourage will lead the Carnaval float parades at the four centers: Panaji, (February 25), Margao (February 26), Vasco (February 27) and Mapusa (February 28).
Carnaval float parades will also be held in Curchorem and Shiroda on February 27 and at Ponda on February 28. So go ahead and block your days for the Goa Carnival 2017 and be a part of a festival that Goa awaits to witness for the whole year.
