Deepika’s story unfolds in the serene surroundings of Aldona, where she spent her formative years before pursuing higher education in Bangalore. She reflects on her academic path, stating, “I completed my 10th grade at St. Thomas Girls High School in Aldona. Later, I attended St. Xavier’s High School and earned my BSc in Mathematics.” Following this, she immersed herself in her post-graduate studies in Mathematics at Christ University, Bangalore, but her academic pursuits are just one aspect of her multifaceted identity.
In the past two years, Deepika has made significant strides in the startup ecosystem, focusing on renewable energy and health tech initiatives. Her roles in customer engagement and operational excellence have shaped her professional journey, showcasing her commitment to enhancing user experiences.
Beyond her academic and professional life, Deepika’s artistic side shines through her musical talents. She often performs at local restaurants, enchanting audiences with her voice.
“My journey into the culinary world may not have followed a traditional path, but food has always held a special place in my heart,” she muses. Her culinary evolution began in college with basic baking and cooking, but it soon transformed into a deeper passion. Cooking became her refuge, a way to unwind amidst life’s demands.
The COVID-19 pandemic served as a catalyst for her culinary exploration. Returning to Goa and transitioning to online studies, Deepika seized the opportunity to refine her skills. In 2021, she launched a small home-based business specializing in Bao, embarking on a flavorful journey.
She also gained professional experience as a sous chef at Barefoot in Parra, Goa. Despite her growing success, she initially viewed cooking as a casual pursuit for friends and family. However, the culinary passion within her was undeniable. “With youth on my side and a strong support network, I felt compelled to explore this passion further,” she says, leading to a remarkable transition into the culinary realm.
Deepika has been a consultant for The Owl House, an NGO that is creating a café managed by neurodiverse students, reflecting her commitment to inclusivity. Additionally, she co-founded the “Aldona Supper Club” with a friend, curating unique dining experiences that celebrate community and gastronomy.
Deepika’s hands-on industry experience and part-time roles at a restaurant underscores her dedication. She emphasizes that real-world immersion has been invaluable, despite her lack of formal culinary training.
“For me, cooking is a blend of experimentation and understanding the science behind flavors,” she shares. Initially, she approached cooking with a trial-and-error mindset, but her perspective has evolved. “Now, I focus on understanding the ‘why’ behind each dish,” she explains, leading to a more refined and consistent culinary practice.
Deepika acknowledges the challenges of her journey, admitting, “I once felt intimidated by my lack of formal training.” However, she has embraced a growth mindset, realizing that expertise can be cultivated at any stage of life. “The journey begins with that first step, regardless of perceived limitations,” she affirms.
Deepika credits much of her culinary knowledge to her mother, an exceptional cook, and has supplemented her learning through online resources.
Looking ahead, Deepika envisions consulting for a wider range of restaurants and leading culinary events. She dreams of launching a boutique catering business for intimate gatherings, eager to explore the rich tapestry of culinary experiences awaiting her.
