In the tranquil beaches of Goa, a new sports sensation has emerged—Gaurang Amdekar, whose journey from Mumbai to global success in the world of kettlebell sport is nothing short of inspiring. Recently securing second place at the prestigious World Kettlebell Sport Federation (WKSF) 2024 Championship in Poland, Gaurang’s story is a testament to resilience, passion, and an unwavering drive for excellence. His journey into kettlebell sport—an extreme endurance discipline—speaks volumes about the power of perseverance in the face of adversity.
A Humble Beginning in Mumbai
Born and raised in Mumbai, Gaurang Amdekar’s early years were not marked by a heavy involvement in sports. He attended Chogle High School in Borivali East and later pursued a B.Sc. from ML Dahanukar College. While his academic focus was clear, Gaurang’s passion for fitness developed gradually, beginning with his father’s encouragement.
In the 11th grade, Gaurang’s father, the late Mr. Sudhir Amdekar, urged him to join a gym, sparking his lifelong commitment to fitness. “From that point onward, I stayed consistent in my training daily,” recalls Gaurang. This consistency soon saw him transition from a casual gym-goer to a competitive bodybuilder, participating in bodybuilding competitions from 2014 to 2019.
The Catalyst: COVID-19 and a New Passion
Like many others, the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020 proved to be a pivotal moment in Gaurang’s life. With gyms shuttered, he found an alternative path to fitness through kettlebells. An online advertisement for a kettlebell certification caught his attention, and soon after, he bought his first competition kettlebell. Intrigued by the challenge of kettlebell lifting, which demands continuous, precise movements like the clean and jerk for up to 30 minutes, Gaurang threw himself into the sport.
His family, initially skeptical of this new venture, expressed concerns, particularly his mother, who feared that kettlebell training might result in back injuries. “Why have you bought these weights? This will hurt your back,” she said, urging him to stick with bodybuilding instead. Despite the doubts, Gaurang was resolute. He began training intensely, often late into the night, even cycling and running at 3:00 AM to build endurance without his parent’s knowledge. “One day, my father caught me, scolded me, and forbade me from cycling due to the heavy truck traffic at that hour. But I persisted and kept training at the beach with kettlebells,” Gaurang shares with a sense of pride.
Rising Through the Ranks
Gaurang’s commitment paid off when he secured his first gold medal at the state level in January 2021, quickly followed by another gold at the national level just two months later. This early success was a sign of things to come.
In 2022, Gaurang made another major life change by relocating to Goa for a job opportunity. This move was not only a professional shift but also a cultural and sporting transformation. In Goa, he found a vibrant, supportive environment that allowed him to fully commit to his kettlebell training. He continued to win gold at the state and national levels, proudly representing Goa for the first time at the national competitions.
It was also in Goa that Gaurang caught the attention of the Girevoy Sport India Federation, who invited him to represent India at the 2022 World Championship in Portugal. This was his first international competition, and despite the lack of government support for his participation, Gaurang managed to fund his trip through local sponsors. Despite facing financial challenges, he secured a fourth-place finish at both the Portugal and Hungary championships in 2022.
Overcoming Personal Tragedy
The road to success, however, was not without its sacrifices. In late 2023, Gaurang faced the heartbreaking loss of his father, Mr. Sudhir Amdekar, who had been his pillar of support throughout his athletic journey. Even during this incredibly difficult time, Gaurang continued to train relentlessly, driven by the dream that his father had shared with him—to see him bring a medal to India.
“I never stopped working out, even after my father passed away,” Gaurang admits, his voice filled with emotion. “It was his dream too. I wanted to fulfill it for both of us.” The culmination of his perseverance came in 2024 when he won a silver medal at the World Kettlebell Sport Federation (WKSF) Championship in Poland, a victory that was as much about honoring his father’s memory as it was about his own achievement. “I cried a lot with mixed emotions,” he reflects. “All those sacrifices and discipline paid off, but my dad isn’t here to see my medal.”
Ambitions Beyond the Medal
While the silver medal at the WKSF 2024 Championship in Poland is a significant achievement, Gaurang’s aspirations stretch far beyond individual success. His ultimate goal is to win a gold medal for India and build a world-class kettlebell team in Goa. “I want to spread awareness of kettlebell sport in Goan schools and ensure that young athletes in Goa are given the opportunity to compete on a global stage,” he says, envisioning a future where India becomes a powerhouse in the sport.
His mission includes nurturing local talent, training aspiring athletes, and making kettlebell lifting a more widely recognized and respected sport in the region. “Goa has untapped potential,” Gaurang believes. “If we focus on training and consistency, we can produce athletes who will compete with the best in the world.”
The Path to Success: Consistency and Technique
For aspiring kettlebell athletes, Gaurang offers invaluable advice based on his journey: “Kettlebell sport is all about perfect technique and patience. Many people expect fast results, but this sport requires consistent effort over time. It’s not about rushing; it’s about building your technique step by step.”
This mindset of persistence has been the cornerstone of his success. Gaurang’s relentless pursuit of excellence, even through personal loss and financial challenges, has shaped him into a true champion. His story serves as an inspiration to anyone who dreams of achieving greatness, no matter the obstacles in their path.
A Legacy in the Making
Gaurang Amdekar’s rise from Mumbai to the international kettlebell stage is a powerful narrative of perseverance, sacrifice, and triumph. His journey, marked by an unshakable commitment to his sport and his late father’s dream, exemplifies the essence of a true champion. As he continues to strive for gold and build a kettlebell community in Goa, Gaurang is not only achieving personal milestones but also paving the way for the next generation of athletes to shine on the world stage.
Gaurang Amdekar’s story is a reminder that greatness is achieved through dedication, discipline, and the courage to pursue one’s dreams, no matter the odds. As he continues his journey, he is set to become a beacon of hope and inspiration for aspiring athletes across India, proving that with grit and passion, anything is possible.
