Known for his profound knowledge of Goan history and unwavering dedication to preserving its cultural legacy, Sakhardande has become a respected figure in the region.

His journey into activism began in 2000 during the Save Mhadei agitation, where his passionate advocacy for Goa’s natural and cultural treasures catapulted him into the public spotlight. Since then, he has tirelessly fought against encroachments on the state’s historic landmarks and cultural sites, embodying the spirit of a true guardian of Goa’s heritage.

In an engaging interview, Professor Sakhardande shared his compelling narrative, reflecting on the challenges and triumphs of his mission to safeguard Goa’s soul for future generations. His passion for history can be traced back to his childhood when he was first captivated by the subject through the graphic tales of Amar Chitra Katha. “History has always held a special place in my heart,” he recalls, describing how the allure of historical narratives fueled his love for the past.

At Dhempe College, where he has spent over three decades shaping young minds as an Associate Professor and Head of the History Department, Sakhardande has consistently promoted the importance of heritage preservation. His commitment to this cause became evident early on, and he has since emerged as a stalwart advocate for Goa’s rich history.

Sakhardande’s path to becoming a historian was not straightforward. Like many young individuals, he initially faced pressure to pursue a career in medicine, as envisioned by his mother. However, he soon realized that his true passion lay in the Arts. Transitioning from the Science stream to embrace his love for history proved to be a transformative decision, paving the way for his future endeavors.

After graduating with distinction from Goa University, Sakhardande embarked on a scholarly journey that culminated in an M.Phil. in History, focusing on the Pre-Portuguese Era. His teaching career began swiftly after, bringing him immense joy as he imparted knowledge to eager students.

Beyond the classroom, Sakhardande’s impact on society is profound. His foray into social activism began during an NSS Camp Delegation in 1995, exposing him to pressing societal issues. This experience ignited a passion for change and preservation that has defined his career.

From the Insaaf Conference in 1996 to the Mhadai Bachao Abhiyaan in 1997, his commitment to safeguarding Goa’s environmental heritage became increasingly evident. Inspired by Gandhi’s teachings, he leads educational heritage walks with his students, instilling in them a deep appreciation for Goa’s historical treasures.

In 2000, Sakhardande’s heritage activism reached new heights when he became an Executive Member of the Goa Heritage Action Group. This role positioned him at the forefront of efforts to protect and preserve Goa’s cultural legacy, driven by an unwavering commitment to future generations.

His journey has been marked by both successes and challenges. From successfully preserving landmarks such as the Tonca Pillar of 1859 and the Vasco Clock Tower of 1938 to ongoing conservation efforts for iconic forts like Reis Magos, Sakhardande’s dedication knows no bounds. He not only champions preservation but also enriches the educational experience by leading his students along the Kushavati Heritage Trail, exploring historical sites like Chandor, the first capital of Goa.

Sakhardande’s influence as an educator extends to his activism, where he lends his expertise to organizations like Goa Bachao Abhiyan, engaging in campaigns against SEZ and CRZ violations. His efforts have achieved significant milestones, such as the Save Coconut Chipko Andolan and the relocation of ancient sculptures to the Goa State Museum.

Moreover, Sakhardande has emerged as a prolific writer and historian, capturing Goa’s rich culture and heritage in acclaimed publications. His first book, “Muslim History and Heritage of Goa,” released in 2012, marked the beginning of a literary journey that continues with his latest work, “The Quest for Goa.” These writings serve as a testament to his enduring passion for preserving and celebrating the essence of his homeland.

This commitment to educating the public about Goa’s rich history is a reflection of his belief that heritage is a vital component of cultural identity.

Sakhardande’s passion for history extends beyond local boundaries. His travels around the globe—from the ancient wonders of Egypt and Jordan to the picturesque landscapes of Germany and Switzerland—have enriched his understanding of history and culture. These experiences fuel his desire to protect and celebrate cultural treasures worldwide.
