Mohin Sawant, a passionate photographer from the vibrant state of Goa, undoubtedly belongs to the latter. For Mohin, photography was never just a pastime; it was an artistic journey that sparked a deep connection within him. Despite initial opposition from his family, his determination to follow his passion was unshakable. “Photography is not just about taking pictures; it’s an art form, a skill that demands mastery,” Mohin states with conviction. Having come from a scientific background, his photography journey was driven by his unwavering dedication to the craft.
The turning point in Mohin’s career arrived in 2014 when he won his first photography competition, organized by Vidhya Vrudhi Sanstha. “That was the moment my dreams became reality,” he fondly recalls. This win wasn’t just a validation of his talent; it marked the beginning of a life he was meant to live. “When I truly began to enjoy my work behind the lens, I felt like I started LIVING my life,” Mohin reflects, capturing the essence of his artistic transformation.
With numerous accolades to his name, Mohin’s talent speaks for itself. He has won several prestigious photography contests, including those hosted by Vidhya Vrudhi Sanstha and the Rotary Club. “Every time I reflect on these moments, I feel immense pride. I’m grateful to the version of myself that dared to showcase his art to the world,” he shares. Yet, it’s his first-ever victory at Vidhya Vrudhi Sanstha that remains etched in his memory as the most defining moment of his career. “There are no words to describe the emotions I felt—it was the affirmation I needed to believe in my abilities.”
Completing a degree in photography from Seamedu Media School was a milestone that further honed his craft. “Seamedu provided me with unparalleled knowledge and experiences,” Mohin says with gratitude. The formal education he received transformed him as an artist, equipping him with professional techniques that continue to shape his work today.
Among the many genres Mohin explores, wildlife photography holds a special place in his portfolio. A defining moment came in 2016 when he won a state-level competition organized by Gomantak Times. Recalling the thrill of capturing a rare bird species in the dense forests of Goa, Mohin paints a vivid picture of the experience. After days of waiting patiently in a secluded spot, camera poised, he finally seized the perfect moment at dawn. “It was more than just a shot—it was a connection with Goa’s wildlife, a testament to the region’s rich biodiversity,” Mohin remarks. This triumph validated his dedication and fueled his passion to continue exploring the natural wonders of Goa through his lens.
As a judge at Solapur University’s youth festival, Mohin has also been able to give back to the creative community by mentoring young talent. “It was a privilege to witness the diversity in artistic expression,” he notes. This experience not only broadened his perspective but also reaffirmed his commitment to fostering the next generation of photographers.
His work with The Indian Express and Literature Studios reflects the diversity of his talent. Each project has been an opportunity for growth, and Mohin approaches every assignment to learn something new. His distinctive style is showcased through his Instagram handle, art_of_blinks, where he shares his latest work. “For a photographer, each photo is special, each moment captured is unique,” Mohin explains, adding that his photographs convey stories that words often cannot.
Goa, with its scenic landscapes and rich cultural heritage, serves as an endless source of inspiration for Mohin. From the serene beaches to the bustling street markets, he has his favourite spots that truly capture the essence of this beautiful state. “Goa is a photographer’s dream,” he says, referring to the state’s unique blend of natural beauty and vibrant culture.
Over his eight-year career, Mohin has witnessed the rapid evolution of photography in the digital age. From the transition to digital cameras and smartphones to the influence of post-processing software, social media, and even new technologies like drones and AI, he acknowledges the need for constant adaptation. “To remain relevant in this ever-changing field, you must embrace new tools and techniques,” he advises.
To aspiring photographers, particularly those based in Goa, Mohin’s advice is simple: “Practice patience and observation.” He emphasizes the importance of being present, waiting for the right moment, and continuously learning from one’s experiences. “Photography is about telling a story, and each shot should be more than just an image—it should evoke emotion and meaning.”
