At just 18, Akshata Halarnkar had already making waves in the world of yoga, combining her studies at Dhempe College with her aspirations to become a national and international champion. A gold medalist in yoga, she began her journey at the tender age of nine and has since represented Goa six times at the national level, while also coaching aspiring yogis.
Akshata’s introduction to yoga was serendipitous. While in the fourth grade, she was encouraged by seniors at Mary Immaculate School to join the school team for a taluka-level competition. “They needed a flexible student who could touch their toes without bending their knees,” she recalls. Her success in that initial test marked the beginning of a competitive journey that would transform her life.
After joining the team, Akshata diligently practiced the asanas at home, motivated by her newfound confidence. Though she initially imitated yoga poses from television, her determination led her to take the practice seriously, resulting in significant achievements by the sixth grade. Under the mentorship of her teacher and coach, Hema Keni Randhava, she honed her skills, learning from each experience—even setbacks.
Support from her family has been unwavering. “My parents attended every performance and competition, cheering me on,” she says, recalling her progression from taluka to district and state levels. Akshata faced fierce competition, particularly from schools in South Goa, but her dedication allowed her to analyze her rivals, transforming weaknesses into strengths.
Winning first place in her sixth-grade competition was a pivotal moment. Akshata also participated in a National Yoga Day event organized by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, performing on stage for the first time to a large audience.
Akshata distinguishes between traditional and artistic yoga. While traditional asanas focus on holding positions for longer durations, artistic yoga integrates dance and music, requiring a blend of creativity and skill. Her experiences at national competitions have been challenging but rewarding; despite disqualification in her first national performance, she achieved fourth place in eighth grade, a milestone she cherishes.
Now a state-level gold medalist, Akshata is training for senior national-level competitions. Though she trains her own students, she also seeks guidance from seniors and peers, often practicing together on weekends.
In addition to her competitive pursuits, Akshata runs yoga classes for aspiring students and women looking to enhance their fitness. Balancing college with her teaching responsibilities can be demanding, but she is committed to her practice. “I aim to start early morning sessions to ensure I have enough time to prepare for nationals,” she explains.
Her message to aspiring yogis is clear: “Yoga enhances flexibility, strength, and overall health. It has no disadvantages or side effects.” Akshata advocates for everyone to embrace yoga, emphasizing its profound benefits for both body and mind.
As she continues to excel in her yoga journey, Akshata Halarnkar inspires others to discover their potential and live healthier, more balanced lives through this transformative practice.
