Born and raised in Deulwada, a small village in Arambol, Goa, Krunal Kiran Thakur is a remarkable young man who has turned adversity into strength. As a person with a disability individual, Krunal’s journey is a testament to resilience and determination. A law graduate, he is committed to making a difference in his community and aspires to enter politics to advocate for the rights of persons with disabilities.
Krunal’s early life began in Gujarat, where his father served in the military. This early exposure to a different environment shaped his formative years. Upon returning to Goa at the age of two, he faced significant challenges. Struggling to learn Konkani, he initially felt isolated. However, with the support of his parents and the welcoming attitude of Mr. Dabholkar, the principal of Harmal Panchakroshi School, he quickly overcame these hurdles and excelled academically.
Krunal’s life has been marked by a series of challenges, especially physical ones. He recalls how his mother tirelessly carried him to school and appointments, navigating the difficulties of raising a person with a disability individual. Despite facing two significant changes in his body that affected his mobility, Krunal’s determination never wavered. He actively engages in social work and educational pursuits, demonstrating that his mind is as agile as his spirit is strong.
His dream of becoming a lawyer fueled his ambition to pursue a B.A.L.L.B. at V.M. Salgaocar College of Law. Despite his physical challenges, he excelled in the entrance exam, earning admission based on merit. Krunal emphasizes that his physical condition has never defined him; rather, it has motivated him to push beyond limits.
At nine, due to a change in his body, Krunal began using a wheelchair. Rather than viewing this as a setback, he adapted quickly, integrating the wheelchair into his daily life, allowing him greater independence and ease of movement.
Krunal has even made history as the first person with a disability in Pernem Taluka to file a nomination for local panchayat elections. He presented his vision for community development to voters, showcasing his commitment to serve and uplift his ward. Krunal believes that politics is a powerful avenue to effect change, particularly for the persons with disabilities community. Regardless of the outcome, he is focused on advocating for social responsibility and aims to continue his journey of service.
Krunal’s message to others in the persons with a disability community is one of empowerment: “Don’t let hurdles define you. View your challenges as opportunities for growth.” He encourages everyone to pursue their dreams relentlessly, reminding us that life is beautiful and worth embracing, regardless of its challenges.
