Leena Kamat Prabhu, the visionary owner of Angriya Cruise and Pier, a premier multi-cuisine restaurant in Goa, has carved a remarkable path in the maritime industry. Her story is one of passion, perseverance, and breaking barriers.

Leena hails from a family steeped in India’s rich history, with roots tracing back to freedom fighters, journalists, engineers, and entrepreneurs. Growing up amidst the natural beauty surrounding her geologist father’s expeditions, she developed a spirit of exploration and resilience early on.

Her mother, a creative influence, introduced her to art, literature, and social responsibility, while her grandmother, affectionately known as Mai, instilled the values of compassion and hospitality. These formative experiences shaped Leena into the empathetic and dynamic leader she is today.

With a supportive father who encouraged her independence, Leena learned practical skills from a young age, fostering a belief in her abilities and a passion for continuous learning. Frequent relocations due to her father’s job exposed her to diverse cultures, teaching her the value of adaptability and inspiring her keen eye for interior design, cultivated through her mother’s creative endeavors.

After marrying her childhood friend and entering a joint family, Leena embraced new challenges and pursued further education in business management. This pursuit was further fueled by her husband’s encouragement and her desire to excel.

Her background in marketing genetics and managing resorts in Goa provided a solid foundation for her ambitious venture into the maritime sector. Guided by her brother’s captivating tales of the sea, Leena immersed herself in the industry’s complexities.

In December 2016, a chance encounter led her to acquire a cruise ship that resonated with her vision. Originally from Japan, the vessel underwent a transformative redesign, reflecting the essence of India’s west coast and honoring Sarkhel Kanhoji Angre, the Maratha Empire’s first admiral.

As she navigated a traditionally male-dominated industry, Leena broke through barriers, becoming the first woman to stay on board during the ship’s interior decoration and hospitality setup. Her determination and resilience earned her the respect of her male counterparts, and she even shared in the camaraderie of sailor jokes.

Despite facing numerous challenges, Leena remained committed to inclusivity, ensuring safety measures on the ship were accommodating for women in sarees. Through her experiences, she developed a profound appreciation for the intricacies of shipbuilding and the precision required in both the engine and deck departments.

Launched in October 2018, Angriya Cruise became India’s first privately-owned domestic cruise ship of its size. Leena’s meticulous attention to detail and passion for showcasing the region’s history, culture, and marine biodiversity culminated in a vessel that stands as a testament to her dedication and her team’s collective efforts.

Leena’s commitment to empowering women in the maritime industry is evident in her initiatives, paving the way for future generations to follow in her footsteps.
